How to Fix Sealing Film Misalignment?

Sealing film misalignment during operation is a common issue on production lines. Film deviation not only affects seal positioning accuracy but can also lead to poor sealing, wrinkles, or even film breakage, causing downtime and waste. Based on years of on-site service experience, Leadtra Packaging has summarized 6 quick troubleshooting and adjustment steps to help you resolve misalignment efficiently.

1. Check Film Roll Installation (Most Often Overlooked)

If the film roll is not centered on the shaft, or if it wobbles after installation, this is the most common cause of misalignment. During installation, ensure the film roll fits snugly against the shaft and is symmetrically positioned at both ends. Rotate the roll manually to check for smoothness and any wobbling. If the roll itself has uneven edges, consider replacing it or adjusting the installation position.

2. Adjust Clamp Tightness (Get the Feel Right)

If the clamps (butterfly clamps) holding the film roll are too tight, they increase rotational resistance, causing the film to stretch and deform. If too loose, the film roll wobbles, also leading to misalignment. The correct tightness allows the film roll to rotate gently by hand — with some resistance but smooth movement. Clamp tightness should be balanced on both sides, avoiding one side tighter than the other.

3. Balance Tension (Equal Pull on Both Sides)

Improper tension adjustment along the film path, with uneven pull on the left and right sides, can cause the film to drift to one side. Feel the film surface tension by hand — it should be flat without slack. Adjust the tension control rods or springs to ensure even pull on both sides. If your equipment is equipped with automatic tension control, check that the sensors are functioning properly.

4. Clean and Calibrate the Photoelectric Eye (Accurate Signal Required)

For automatic sealing machines, the photoelectric eye detects the registration marks on the film. If the sensor is dirty, mispositioned, or has incorrect sensitivity settings, it can lead to inaccurate cutting and sealing positions. Clean the sensor lens with a soft cloth; ensure the light spot accurately hits the center of the registration mark; adjust sensitivity appropriately based on mark contrast.

5. Inspect Guide Rollers (Clear Path Needed)

During operation, if some guide rollers rotate unevenly, have dirty surfaces, or are coated with adhesive residue, they can affect the smooth movement of the film and cause misalignment. Clean all guide roller surfaces; check that rollers rotate smoothly; ensure the roller axes are perpendicular to the film travel direction.

6. Adjust Heat-Sealing Temperature (Even Heat Required)

Excessive temperature can cause uneven shrinkage of the film, leading to warping or distortion — especially with multi-layer composite films where different layers shrink at different rates. Try lowering the heat-sealing temperature appropriately and ensure uniform temperature distribution across the heating elements to avoid localized overheating.
