Can Aluminum Foil Sealing Film Seal Plastic Bottles?
Yes, and plastic bottles are one of the most common applications for aluminum foil sealing film. But between "can seal" and "seals well," there are a few key conditions.
First, look at the bottle mouth material
Plastic bottles aren't one material — they're a whole category. PET, PE, PP, PS, PVC... Different materials have different heat resistance, surface energy, and affinity for the heat-seal adhesive layer. PET bottle mouths can withstand higher sealing temperatures; PE bottle mouths are relatively sensitive; PP bottle mouths fall somewhere in between. The heat-seal layer formulation of aluminum foil sealing film needs to be matched to the bottle mouth material. Use the wrong formulation, and it either won't seal properly or will damage the bottle mouth.
Next, look at the sealing method
There are two main ways aluminum foil sealing film seals plastic bottles. One is electromagnetic induction sealing: place the aluminum foil gasket inside the cap, tighten it, and heat it through induction equipment. The aluminum foil heats up, melting the heat-seal layer onto the bottle mouth. This method is non-contact, fast, and suitable for high-volume production. The other is hot-press sealing: a heated plate presses directly onto the film, suitable for small batches or irregular containers.
The key lies in parameter matching
The biggest concern with sealing plastic bottles is "will it burn the bottle mouth?" In reality, during electromagnetic induction heating, heat is concentrated in the aluminum foil layer — the bottle mouth itself doesn't heat up. As long as power and time are set correctly, the temperature can be precisely controlled between 130-180°C, without warping the plastic bottle mouth. However, if power is too high or time too long, there is indeed a risk of localized softening at the bottle mouth. Therefore, small-batch testing with actual bottle mouths during the sampling stage is essential to find the optimal parameter combination.
Bottle mouth condition also matters
The flatness and cleanliness of the plastic bottle mouth directly affect sealing results. Burrs, oil, or moisture on the bottle mouth can lead to weak seals or false seals. Keeping the bottle mouth clean and dry before sealing is a basic prerequisite.
Leadtra Packaging offers aluminum foil sealing film solutions tailored to different plastic bottle mouth materials, with sample testing support. If you're unsure which sealing film suits your plastic bottles, send a few bottles over — we'll help you match.
