What's the Difference Between Sealing Gaskets and Sealing Films?
In daily consultations, we often hear: "Aren't sealing gaskets and sealing films the same thing?" It's true that these two terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but they have clear differences in structure, application method, and sealing principle. Today, Leadtra Packaging will clarify it once and for all.
1. Product Form Differences
Sealing film generally refers to a thin film material that directly covers the container opening. It is typically supplied in roll or sheet form. During use, the film is fused directly onto the bottle mouth through heat sealing or electromagnetic induction sealing. The sealing film itself is a complete composite film with no separate supporting structure.
A sealing gasket is a "composite assembly," usually made of multiple layers: the top layer is paperboard or a foam layer, the middle is aluminum foil, and the bottom is a heat-seal layer. It resembles a small disc, pre-placed inside the bottle cap. During sealing, the aluminum foil fuses with the bottle mouth, while the paperboard layer remains inside the cap.
Simply put: a sealing film is "just a film," while a sealing gasket is a "composite structure" containing multiple parts such as paperboard, aluminum foil, and a heat-seal layer.
2. Sealing Principle Differences
Sealing film can be sealed in relatively more ways — either by direct heat sealing using an electric heat-sealing machine, or by electromagnetic induction heating.
Sealing gaskets primarily rely on electromagnetic induction technology. The gasket is placed inside the cap and tightened, then heated non-contact through an electromagnetic induction sealer. This heats the aluminum foil layer, melts the heat-seal layer, and fuses it with the bottle mouth to form a seal. This process is completed through the cap, is highly efficient, and is suitable for mass production.
3. Application Differences
Sealing films are common in cup and bowl products (such as yogurt cups, instant noodle bowls), as well as flexible tube products (such as facial cleansers and ointments).
Sealing gaskets are primarily used in screw-cap containers like wide-mouth and narrow-mouth bottles, widely applied in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and daily chemical industries.
4. Consumer Experience Differences
With sealing films, the film directly covers the bottle opening, and consumers simply tear it open directly.
After sealing with a sealing gasket, the gasket separates into two parts: the aluminum foil layer remains on the bottle mouth to form the seal, while the paperboard layer stays inside the cap. When consumers unscrew the cap, the paperboard layer is removed with it, leaving the aluminum foil seal on the bottle mouth. Some gaskets are designed as easy-tear types, allowing consumers to easily peel off the aluminum foil layer.
5. Summary Comparison Table
