Does sealing film performance degrade after high-temperature retort? This is a question asked by almost every customer making products that require high-temperature sterilization. The answer is: Yes, it can — but not all films do. The key lies in choosing the right film and doing the right validation.

Why does high-temperature retort affect sealing film performance?

High-temperature retort — typically a moist heat sterilization process at 121°C or above — is an extreme test for sealing film. During this process, the film simultaneously faces three types of stress: heat softens or even melts the film; moisture tries to penetrate between the layers; and steam pressure pushes the seal outward from the inside. If the film's temperature resistance isn't sufficient, or the lamination strength is inadequate, the seal area may delaminate, soften, curl, or even detach.

So how do you verify it? You can't just look at it.

Verifying whether sealing film performance meets standards after high-temperature retort requires a standardized process. The most common method is a simulated retort test based on actual production conditions: place the sealed product into a retort, set the same temperature and duration as the actual sterilization process (e.g., 121°C/30 minutes or 135°C/15 minutes), then remove and cool to room temperature after sterilization.

Then check three things: Appearance — any bubbles, discoloration, delamination, or curling on the sealing film; Seal integrity — using dye penetration or vacuum decay methods to check whether the seal is still intact; Peel force — test the change in peel force before and after retort. If peel force drops more than 30%, the performance has significantly degraded.
