What Is the Shelf Life of Sealing Film and How Should It Be Stored?

Does sealing film have a shelf life? If you buy a batch of film and leave it for a while, can you still use it? This is a question many customers ask. The answer is yes, sealing film does have a shelf life — but how long that life is depends heavily on storage conditions. Today, Leadtra Packaging discusses the storage of sealing film.

1. What Is the Shelf Life?

Under normal conditions (unopened and properly stored), standard aluminum foil sealing film typically has a shelf life of 24 to 36 months. However, this is only an estimate — the actual usable period largely depends on the storage environment. In the packaging industry, a common shelf life reference is: storage at 7℃ to 38℃ with relative humidity around 50%, during which the film should remain stable for about three years.

2. What Does Proper Storage Look Like?

Temperature — not too high, not too low. The ideal storage temperature is between 15-30℃. Above 38℃, the heat-seal adhesive may soften and stick; below 7℃, the film may become brittle.

Humidity — moderate is key. Recommended humidity is around 50%-70%. Aluminum foil gaskets are prone to moisture absorption; high humidity can cause adhesive failure, but low humidity can also make the film lose flexibility.

Avoid light, pressure, and contamination. Extended exposure to sunlight accelerates aging of the aluminum foil layer. For pre-cut sheets, store them flat and stacked to avoid bending. For rolls, prevent loosening and deformation. Keep sealing film away from volatile solvents or corrosive substances to avoid adhesive dissolution or aluminum foil corrosion.

Use promptly after opening. Once a roll is opened, if not properly resealed, air and moisture gradually penetrate, potentially degrading performance within months. It's generally recommended to use opened film within 6 months. For longer storage (over 3 months) without use, consider vacuum packaging or cooler storage, but allow the film to return to room temperature before use to avoid condensation affecting performance.

Final Thoughts

Sealing film doesn't "get better with age" — but it doesn't necessarily "expire and become useless" either. If you notice adhesive cracking, yellowing of the aluminum foil, or obvious film deformation, it's not recommended to continue using it, as sealing effectiveness may be compromised. If you're unsure whether your film is still usable, send it to Leadtra Packaging — we can test its performance to see if it still meets standards. A good film deserves to be stored well.
